Airport Climate Change forecast

Sector: Aviation

Capability: Strategy & Economics

We worked with an airport operator to determine the impact climate change would have on their business post the covid-19 pandemic. This was to serve as a guide for future planning from the covid-19 pandemic and how travel patterns would change with the increase in environmental pressures. The operator acknowledged that this was a longterm issue which could impact the overall demand of the airport. The results were then given to the operator to ensure their long-term plans, internal business plans, and general operating strategy were aligned to the results of the forecast.

  • The impact of climate change on the airport was broken down into three separate quantifiable problems:
    • As the country becomes hotter fewer people will travel in the summer – thus dampening annual growth.
    • Regulatory pressure from government and regulatory bodies would impact the future of aviation demand.
    • Environmental lobby effect – an increasing consciousness within the passenger base to the negative environmental impacts of flying.
  • These results were presented in an annual passenger forecast segregated by geography and destination.
  • Results were consequently presented to the operator highlighting our approach, methodology and results.
  • Provided robust and quantifiable assumptions for each of the environmental impacts.
  • Our assumptions captured the main changes to passenger demand and how this will evolve over time.
  • Each impact was individually structured so that the effects could be tested both individually and cumulatively – giving the client maximum flexibility and the ability to test the quantum of each variable.
  • The client was aware of our assumptions during the inception stage, this ensured transparency and meant that they could then feedback our assumptions and methodology clearly to internal colleagues.
